The other day, Microsoft announced they would be allowing developers to implement cross-network play for Xbox One and Windows 10, meaning users on Xbox Live could play online with users on other platforms, such as PlayStation 4.
Now, after this invitation from Microsoft, Sony spoke to GameSpot regarding cross-platform play,
PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002. We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play.
Sony didn’t declare whether or not they are going support cross-platform play, but they are open to it. This can be only good for gamers if this falls through. This could be a boon for online games with smaller communities and on multiple platforms, as well. Combining the pools may increase connectivity overall.
I know I’m hopeful for developers to get on board with it. It can be frustrating to wait around for players in an online lobby because there just aren’t enough people. Let us see how this turns out.
